Fawzia Koofi Condemns the New Law Devastating Women's Rights

The Afghanistan feminist leader and the member of the house of representative Fawzia Koofi express disapproval of new created law that narrows women rights in Afghanistan. The new law announced by the office of President Karzai that would forbid women from going to the doctor or leaving their home without their husband's protection. It also reportedly grants custody of children only to fathers or grandfathers. ‘’ -
. ‘’ - I respect sectors and religious diversity, but some parts of this law is against fundamental rights of human beings, like the child custody, woman personal choice for clothing and make up, above all debating this law give a strong hand for some fundamentalists to impose their views and personal perspectives’’, said Ms. Fawzia Koofi.

The new create a huge argument in local and international media around the world.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay urged the Afghan Government to rescind a new law, reportedly signed by President Karzai earlier this month, saying it would seriously undermine women's rights in Afghanistan and contravene the Afghanistan constitution as well as universal human rights standards. Local media assumes Karzai is trying to win the heart and minds by signing such a law for the Shiite Muslims in Afghanistan to receive their votes. Influential Shiite clerics, and Shiite political parties backed the law.

"We have elections coming up in the summer and President Karzai's dependency on these fundamentalist groups is growing - and also he wants to have the support of the extremist Shiite groups’’, Fawzia Koofi told BBC reporter. The proceeding of this law was not according to a regural law, it wasn’t discussed article by article as per constitution and rules of procedure, and we needed to amend some articles. Still we managed to bring some changes, like marriage age, temporary marriage etc.

Fawzia Koofi believes that as long as there is some source of pressure and fundamentalists in power the law will be implemented and besides her, they are Shiites women MPs were against it as well.
